The internet is funny!

Less than two months till Wesley Booth is on shelves, and (as I posted on my Facebook Author Page the other day) it has started appearing on various sites for pre-order. It looks like the paperback will have a recommended retail of $15.99. However, one site is selling it for the bargain price of $24.15, which, as they proudly boast, is a minus 51.1% saving. AND they’ve listed it as zero pages long, which puts it squarely in the read-the-whole-thing-in-one-sitting category. Get in quick, because at these prices stocks will last! Ha ha.

Wesley Booth Cover Reveal!

A big moment for any author is their cover reveal. An even bigger moment is their first ever cover reveal. So today on my Facebook Author Page I was thrilled to unveil the cover of my new children’s book, Wesley Booth Super Sleuth, which will be published by Scholastic in July 2015. I think Scholastic has done an incredible job with the cover and I can’t wait to see the finished product on bookstore shelves! I hope you all like it. I’d love to hear your feedback and please share this photo far and wide. Bring on July!

Update on my Writing Projects

World's Best Typewriter

I haven’t posted much about my writing lately, and considering this is my author page, I thought I’d better! It’s always great to see a new book coming together. It’s one of my favourite parts of the writing process. For the past few months I have been working on my new children’s novel, The Twin Spin, and my first draft is now just a couple of weeks away from ‘The End’. I think it’s a really great story, again for around the 9 to 12-year-old age bracket, and I can’t wait to send it to my publisher. But first it must go through some editing and get sent out to my wonderful test readers, so it is still a few months away from being submission ready.

People have been asking me what the status of my other books is, so here is a quick update:

  • The Twin Spin: First draft 80% completed.
  • Captain Falcon: Currently submitted to HarperCollins.
  • Wesley Booth: Slated for an August 2015 release with Scholastic.
  • Wesley Booth Sequel: Planning stage.

So 2015 promises to be a busy year on the writing front. I’ll be plugging away to finish one project, and then straight onto the next, and I’ll also have a book published this year.

As Miranda’s mother would say (in the aptly titled television show, Miranda), such fun!

P.S. You can actually buy the typewriter pictured above, from http://www.usbtypewriter.com/ – Note to wife: I want one, so bad!

Quick Movie Review: Big Hero 6

The school holiday movie marathon continues for our family, as today we took Miss Four and Mister Two, as well as Nana and Poppa, to see another new release, just in time for school holidays, blockbuster, Disney’s Big Hero 6.

bighero6

It’s the story of a young tech genius who teams up with his brother’s marshmallow-like robotic nurse (yes it really is a nurse, or perhaps it is more a doctor than a nurse) and his brother’s college classmates, to avenge…well I won’t tell what they are trying to avenge as that would constitute a spoiler…and track down a mysterious masked villain who has stolen some mind-controlled micro-bots. Don’t worry if that all sounds too confusing, Big Hero 6 is a fantastically fun, team of superheroes, origin story, with jaw-dropping animation and many heartstring-tugging moments, and a hilarious aunt who had me in stitches.

Just like Paddington, which we saw last week (see my earlier post), this is an equally awesome choice for a school holiday flick, which can be enjoyed by children and adults of all ages. I must say, we have been really spoilt at the cinemas this school holidays. I give Big Hero 6 4.5 giant snuggly robots out of 5.

Quick Movie Review: Paddington

Today I saw Paddington with my wife, Miss Four and Mister Two. We all loved this movie. It had plenty of belly laughs, cuteness, great acting, and lots of set-ups and satisfying pay-offs. And I must say, Paddington, minus his trademark wellington boots (disappointing), is one of the most emotive computer-generated characters I have ever seen.

PaddingtonPOSTER

Paddington is a classic character from English children’s literature. The widely-loved Michael Bond books have now been turned into one of the blockbuster films of this holiday season. This film is Paddington’s “origin” story – a polite Peruvian bear travels to London to find a new home. He moves in with the guy from Downton Abbey, and his family, and mayhem ensues, followed by some touching moments.

It’s fun all the way through and my children were engrossed to the end. There are a couple of references to death (parents dying and a lost uncle) and Nicole Kidman threatening to stuff living animals (yikes!) but overall my children seemed neither scared nor distressed, and overall the movie was light, yet deep enough to convey important messages about family and living life to the fullest.

My verdict: a perfect school holiday flick for adults and children alike. 4.5 marmalade sandwiches out of 5 (could have been 5 out of 5 with the addition of wellington boots!).

The Book Deal!

I found out recently that my children’s book, Wesley Booth Super Sleuth, is going to be published by Omnibus Books (an imprint of Scholastic Australia) in 2015!

Needless to say it is an exciting time for my family and me, and I will be posting more details soon, such as the identity of my illustrator, release dates, and so on.

Stay tuned.
